15 Quick Tips for Photo Shoots

January 28, 2021

-Locations and lighting: For nature Sunset, Golden hour light is best.  I can guarantee you almost 100% of all photographers will aim for shooting at sunset.  The light at that time is warmer, softer and will make your skin glow!

-For City locations I like to use the earlier time of day, use the shadows cast from the buildings and work our way out onto tops of structures when the sun sets!

-Empty your pockets; don't just put your phone, sunglasses, wallet, keys all in your back pocket hoping they won't show.  It is best to simply put everything in your photographers camera bag.

- Remove hair ties from the wrist.  It's always a good idea to give your wardrobe a once over before we start shooting.  I normally try to check right away to make sure whatever bracelets we have on are intentional.

- don't wear sunscreen; it tends to leave a film layer that reflects light.  However it is always a great idea to apply  lotion beforehand.

-wear a grey undershirt;  NOT WHITE. white shows through, unlike grey, which is a basecolor.  Nothing worse than seeing your white shirt under your white dress shirt.

-don't wear sunglasses unless it's part of the photo.  If both of you are wearing sunglasses on purpose and it ADDs to the photo it can look really cool. Other than that, we want to see your eyes.  No transitional lenses either!

-Complement one anothers wardrobe, but don't match.  Now if you want the early 90s photo of your whole family in white shirts and blue jeans on the beach...then matching is solid.

-bring a few wardrobe changes;its always fun to change outfits with locations. Even if we don't use all of them it is great to have. Having a backup is nice.  Sometimes things go wrong, our clothes get dirty.

-bring clothes and shoes  to change into after to stay  warm and comfy.

-pets; if your pet is a part of the family and you want them in some of your engagement photos make sure you bring something to grab their attention, and perhaps a friend to help

-weather; we can control just about anything else.  If it rains, there is always a fun way to cuddle up and make it cute.

-out of the ordinary, something different;  let's try to incorporate your hobbies, your interests, perhaps even your career to make your photos super personal.  Harry Potter, slacklining, or your shared love of cooking.  Let's make sure we really show who you are!

-Plan ahead! Would you like to use these photos for; engagement announcements, save the dates, wedding decor, guest book,  Make sure to prepare with any props you need beforehand, like a cute sign that says “thank you” to use on cards.
